Methodology – Phoenix foot traffic data was pulled from the Foot Traffic Trend Value module on a monthlybasis. The metric Person Count was averaged by zip code by month and simple linear regression was appliedto generate trend lines for Foot Traffic. When visualizing the data, the total foot traffic by zip code was plottedon a map and colored by total foot traffic. To analyze specific points of interest, data is aggregated at theCensus Block Group geographic level. Additionally, Census Track level data can be used to investigate thesurrounding area to any point(s) of interest.
Phoenix saw the highest average monthly foot traffic (22,830) July 2022 through December 2022 withJune 2023 having the lowest average foot traffic of 17,325 average visitors. December 2022 had thehighest average foot traffic (24,385) for the total time frame analyzed (06/01/2021-08/30/2023). Whenconsidering only the past 12 months, the foot traffic pattern holds displaying similar seasonality. Furtheranalysis would provide insights into this change in visitor behavior.

Utilizing the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes available in the foot traffic trendvalue module, consumers can gain valuable insights on 110 unique industry sectors found in Phoenix. Thetop industries include: Supermarkets, General Merchandise Stores, Movie Theaters, Hardware Stores,and Convenience Stores. While the industry specific foot traffic patterns generally mirror the overall foottraffic pattern of Phoenix, there is a notable difference in the bookstore industry. While the foot traffic trendin Phoenix is increasing, the bookstore industry is experiencing an decrease in average monthly foottraffic. Additionally, there was a larger than expected decrease in foot traffic in the bookstore industry inFebruary 2023. Deeper analysis of foot traffic data for specific brands in the bookstore industry couldilluminate potential causes for this uptick.

Foot Traffic data is available for 1,416 unique brands in Phoenix allowing consumers to create detailedbrand analysis as well as head-to-head comparisons between two or more brands. The most highly traffickedbrands in Phoenix include: Walmart, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Target, and Costco.Taking a deeper dive into the foot traffic data available for the 60 Walmart locations in Phoenix, we findthat 100% or 60 locations are experiencing an decrease in foot traffic. For the time period 09/01/2022-08/30/2023, Queens Creek has the highest average foot traffic pattern with 388,742 visits per month. TheCholla District area had the highest total foot traffic for Phoenix Walmart locations with 8,241,738 visits.This can be explained by the zip code 85308 being home to 3 Walmart locations in total. The total foottraffic at the 21055 E Rittenhouse Rd location is decreasing, it is the most visited Walmart boastingapproximately 3.00% of all Walmart foot traffic in Phoenix. Conversely, the 8335 E Guadalupe Rdlocation accounts for only 0.59% of the total Phoenix Walmart foot traffic.
