Sjur Sundin - Senior Product Designer working

Talk about your background and how you ended up at Unacast.
After finishing my CS degree in Norway, and working for some Norwegian companies, I moved to San Francisco for a Masters degree in design. I never did graduate from that as I quickly got involved in the startup community. 9 years and 7 seven startups later, including 2,5 years at IBM, I decided to move back to Norway to be closer to my family.
After a short stint at the Norwegian Directorate of eHealth, I found myself looking for another startup. Unacast was the perfect match for me because of the role, the opportunity to make an impact, and because the US is currently the main market for our products.

Talk about the things about your work that interest you most.
One of the fun things about working for a startup is that you get to wear many hats, and you’re free to involve yourself in many projects across multiple disciplines. One day I can be working on strategies for our next big product, the next day I can be fixing small visual bugs in our codebase.

Tell us about a project you are especially proud of!
I’ve only been here for about 3 months so I’ve yet to make the impact I aim for, but so far I’m a little bit proud of contributing to our React codebase, dusting off some of my skills from my CS degree.

Talk about the team and the culture -- what’s different about Unacast?
It is a very collaborative and open culture. People here are smart, humble, and happy to share their knowledge. It is also very social, with both planned and impromptu social events happening frequently.

What do you do in your spare time?
I’m pretty good at baking, but you can’t do that every day. I also enjoy playing around with music, and can proudly say that I’m mediocre on multiple instruments. One day I hope to finish RDR2.

What is your favorite tech at the moment?
Figma is a great and free design tool that can be useful across an organization, not just for designers. I find that using Figma has dramatically improved the way designers, developers, product managers, and stakeholders talk about and work on product design together.
