We explored spring break trends in one of Florida’s most popular beach destinations, Fort Lauderdale. We used foot traffic data to understand which beaches had the highest visitation surges during this peak period in 2023, in order to help us predict the impact of spring break on these areas in 2024.

As winter's chill gradually loosens its grip on much of the United States, thoughts shift to warmer climates, sun-kissed beaches, and the annual rite of passage known as spring break. For many, this means traveling to well-known beach towns, with Fort Lauderdale, Florida, being a perennial favorite. According to Unacast location data, foot traffic in Broward County, Florida increased significantly during the weeks around spring break, from March 5 to April 15, 2023. Foot traffic was 8% higher on average during this time period compared to the rest of the year. Looking closer, we find that the center of this surge is in downtown Fort Lauderdale, with neighborhoods like Central Beach, Las Olas Isles, and Lauderdale Beach experiencing some of the biggest increases in foot traffic activity.
