Frode Bjerke - CTO

Talk about your background and how you ended up at Unacast.
Growing up in a family littered with technologists, I guess it was a surprise to no-one but myself that I ended up studying Computer Science. In my late teens and early twenties my mind was very much focused on being a curler and competing Internationally. Entering the workforce, having just stepped out of my competitive life in curling, I started at a local consulting firm in Oslo, BEKK, with one goal in mind -- maximise my own learning curve. Many projects, tons of mistakes and three years later I joined Unacast to keep my learning curve steep and take part in the “startup journey”.
Talk about the things about your work that interest you most.
I find it massively interesting to be part of shaping a novel industry and technology. Today, no one can tell you how the landscape of Human Mobility Insights will look 10 years from now, much less 100 years down the road. In situations like this the devil is in the details and small decisions made by a single engineer can leave a massive mark for better and for worse. I do my best to think ahead to have us make more decisions that are positive than negative.
Talk about the team and the culture -- what’s different about Unacast?
I find the kind of problems we phase from a product perspective really makes us different. In our teams you get open ended and big challenges to solve. To enable us to deliver on these challenges we have some really outstanding small teams that work extremely well together.
What is your favorite tech at the moment?
GRPC! Having been a API design nerd my entire career I find the developments happening with protobuf and GRPC really encouraging.
